Placement and Diagnostic Examinations

Foreign language placement examinations

All freshmen in the colleges of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences and Natural and Agricultural Sciences who wish to meet their foreign language breadth requirement with the same language taken in high school must take a placement examination. Transfer students who have taken a college-level language course should consult with their advisors. No fee or registration is required. Please bring identification and a number 2 pencil.

Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish examination times are shown on the next page. To schedule an appointment for an examination in Greek, Italian, Latin, or Russian, call the Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages at (909) 787-5007.

Spanish placement examination

Any student who wants to continue taking Spanish after studying it in high school must take the placement examination. Transfer students with college-level Spanish should consult with their advisors. No fee or registration is required. Please bring identification and a number 2 pencil. Seating and examination materials are limited to 150 students, so the test will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Results are available in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese two days after the examination. Results will not be given over the phone. No makeup examinations will be given. For further information, call the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at (909) 787-5007.

Mathematics diagnostic examination

A mathematics diagnostic examination is required of all entering freshmen and transfer students who have not completed a transferable course in mathematics. Students wishing to enroll in Math 003, 004, 005, 009A, 014, 015, 022, or 023 must have completed the prerequisite course or have passed the diagnostic examination at the appropriate level before they can enroll.

Results will be available the morning after the examination. A Learning Center Skills Counselor will discuss the results with each student. A sample of the pre-calculus or intermediate exam can be obtained at the Learning Center, located in parking lot 19.

For further information, call the Learning Center at (909) 787-3721, or e-mail roger.hayes@ucr.edu
