PAWS Features and Security Precautions

How to Access PAWS

On the internet go to http://www.students.ucr.edu/

This will take you to the student records and information page. Choose the button "Access PAWS records." After clicking on this button an intermediate page labeled "Welcome to PAWS" will appear. This page provides some important information about how to use the features. For up-to-the-minute instructions, click on the "instructions" buttton. Halfway down the page, choose the button "click here to enter." This will bring you to the PAWS entry page where you will enter your Student Identification Number (SIDin most cases your Social Security number).

Select PAWS Features You Want to Use

Once at the entry page, enter your SID and click on the login button.

This will take you to a page asking you to enter your Permanent Identification Number (your PERMPIN). Depending on your browser (e.g. Netscape or Microsoft Explorer), you may have to press the tab button on your keyboard before you enter your PERMPIN. After you enter the PERMPIN (you will notice that the numbers are hidden) click on "OK."

This will take you to a main menu page.

From here you can choose to enroll (if it is your appointment period), confirm classes, get your grades, change your PERMPIN, get help, or exit. To locate more detailed instructions for various features, check the table of contents on page 3 of this schedule.

Security Precautions

PAWS includes security elements to safeguard your personal information. However, you should also take certain precautions to make sure no one else can access your records.

1. Keep your PERMPIN confidential. The PERMPIN is required to access your records.

2. Set the cache of your web browser to zero, so your information is not retained in the computer's memory, where it could be viewed by another user. Use the following procedures:

For Netscape Navigator 3.01:

    1. Go to the Options pull-down menu.
    2. Select Network Preferences.
    3. Select the Cache page.
    4. Change disk space of cache to zero
    5. A dialog box will appear asking if you are sure. Click on "OK" to continue.
    6. Click on "OK" to exit.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0:

    1. Go to the Edit pull-down menu.
    2. Select Options.
    3. Select Advanced.
    4. In the Cache section select zero.
    5. Click on "OK" to exit.

3. If you did not set your cache to zero, be sure to clear the cache before you exit PAWS. Clear the cache as follows:

For Netscape Navigator 3.01:

    1. Go to the Options pull-down menu.
    2. Select Network Preferences.
    3. Select the Cache page.
    4. Click on the "clear disk cache now" button.
    5. A dialog box will appear asking if you are sure. Click on "OK" to continue.
    6. Click on "OK" to exit.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0:

    1. Go to the Edit pull-down menu.
    2. Select Options.
    3. Select Advanced.
    4. In the Cache section click on the "empty" button.
    5. Click on "OK" to exit.

4. Never leave your computer unattended while you are logged in. Someone else could access your records while you are away from the computer. As a precaution, the system automatically disconnects if there is no activity for three minutes.

5. Remember to exit the system when you are done. Click on exit and then click on "return to student records home page."

6. When you are finished, be sure to quit your browser program.
