Corequisite(s): course(s) with two or more sections that must be enrolled in simultaneously, such as lecture and discussion; lecture and laboratory; or lecture, discussion, and workshop. Each section has a separate call number. Students risk losing their place in the lecture when they attempt to change discussion or laboratory sections via UCR STAR, as UCR STAR does not hold enrollment in corequisite parts of a course.
Course Grading Option: an option to choose Satisfactory/No Credit grading for a course. The University of California, Riverside General Catalog and this schedule identify courses that have limited grading options. Refer to the University of California, Riverside General Catalog and check with your academic advisor before selecting S/NC grading.
Cross-listed course: course with the same content taught under agreement with two or more departments. Cross-listed courses generally, but not always, share the same course number. The University of California, Riverside General Catalog and this schedule identify cross-listed courses.
Holds: A hold indicates that a student has an unmet academic, admission, administrative, or financial obligation to the University. The Office of the Registrar mails hold notices to continuing students before enrollment begins. Hold notices list each area placing a hold. Students must get a release from the office initiating the hold before they can enroll in classes.
Internet service provider: A company that provides a connection to the internet, usually for a flat fee. Commercial services such as Prodigy and America Online also provide internet service, but they may require use of a proprietary web browser that is incompatible with PAWS.
Modem: A computer component that allows two-way transmission of data over a telephone line. Modems are a popular means to connect home computers to the internet.
PAWS (Phone and Web Services): UCR's online student records, providing a live-data connection to grades, enrollment, and other information.
Permanent Personal Identification Number (PERMPIN): a permanent six-digit number that is set by the Office of the Registrar once a student is admitted to the University. PERMPINs do not change quarterly as REGPINs do and are not used to enroll, add, or drop classes. PERMPINS are required for any web transactions. The PERMPIN can be found on the REGPIN/Enrollment Appointment and Personal Data Form. Students with a picture ID may also pick up a copy of the PERMPIN at the Office of the Registrar.
Prerequisite: required preparatory course(s). Students who have not completed the prerequisite may be prevented from enrolling in the course through PAWS or UCR STAR. Enforced prerequisites appear in the course listings in this schedule. Students who have course work from another institution which may satisfy the course prerequisite should consult their academic advisor and the department offering the course.
Registration: enrolling in classes and paying fees.
Registration Personal Identification Number (REGPIN): a six-digit number that changes quarterly. Students use their REGPIN to enroll, add, and drop classes during scheduled UCR STAR enrollment and make-up periods. Students also use their REGPIN on UCR STAR to confirm enrollment until UCR STAR closes for telephone enrollment. The REGPIN can be found on the REGPIN/Enrollment Appointment and Personal Data Form.
REGPINs protect students' schedules against tampering. It is important to keep them confidential. Students who lose their REGPIN should contact their major department; undeclared majors should contact their college office.
REGPIN/Enrollment Appointment & Personal Data Form: provides students with a REGPIN and enrollment appointment time, along with their current personal data and PERMPIN. The Office of the Registrar mails registration materials that include the REGPIN/Enrollment Appointment & Personal Data form to new undergraduates. Continuing students pick up their forms from their major department or their college office.
Restriction: a course restricted to students in specific class levels and majors or to those students who obtain approval from the instructor/department.
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): PAWS uses authentication and encryption technology to provide a secure web connection and encrypt all data before transmission. This technique protects the privacy of users' personal records. Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer are SSL-compatible web browsers.
UCR STAR: UCR's Student Telephone Assisted Records system. Students can use UCR STAR and a touch-tone telephone to enroll in courses, confirm their enrollment, and get their grades.
Web browser: Software (such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer) that allows a computer user to view information on the World Wide Web, the portion of the internet that provides text, graphics, video, and sound.
Web browser cache: Data that a web browser records on a computer's hard disk in order to speed its display of information. Computer users (especially those who access PAWS from a computer lab) who are concerned about the security of the information they view on PAWS should empty the browser cache and set the cache maximum to zero, so their records are not retained in the computer's memory.
