University of California, Riverside
Fall 1997 Schedule of Classes

General Student Information

Students are held responsible for regulations of the University printed in the University of California, Riverside General Catalog and in this schedule.

Application for Graduation (Declaration of Candidacy)

In order to graduate from UCR, undergraduate students must initiate degree checks and file an Application for Graduation as specified by their college. Transcripts showing transfer work required for graduation must be submitted to the Office of Admissions by September 12, 1997, for Summer Quarter 1997 graduates and January 16, 1998, for Fall Quarter 1997 graduates.

Deadlines for filing the Application for Graduation are listed in the calendar section of this schedule. Applications are not accepted after the deadline established for the quarter.

If for any reason a student does not meet the requirements for graduation after filing the application, another application must be filed for the following quarter.

Students graduating in absentia after an absence of one or more quarters must apply for readmission to the University and file an Application for Graduation with the Office of the Registrar.

The Bourns College of Engineering

Students in The Bourns College of Engineering should check with the Student Affairs Office before the third week of their final quarter to be certain they are on the appropriate degree list.

College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences

Students in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences will receive an "Analysis of Academic Progress" toward degree with their registration PIN forms after they earn 130 units, and every quarter thereafter until graduation. Applications for Graduation must be submitted to the college office by 4 p.m. of the deadline date listed in the calendar section of this schedule.

College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

Students in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences should request a preliminary degree check from the departmental advisor at the beginning of their senior year and then file an Application for Graduation with their college office by the last day to file as listed in the calendar section of this schedule.

Commencement

All students who have been approved for graduation and who wish to be in the commencement ceremonies must register with the Office of Special Programs. Registration information will be mailed in March to all candidates.

Address

Students are responsible for ensuring the Office of the Registrar has their current mailing address on file at all times. Address change forms are found at the back of this schedule and are also available at the Office of the Registrar, 1100 Hinderaker Hall.

Refund disbursement

All refunds will be either deposited directly to the student's bank account or mailed to the student's billing address.

Direct deposit: Student Business Services offers direct deposit for financial aid and other student refunds (credit balance on account). Students may request to have their funds electronically transferred directly to their bank or credit union, rather than wait for a refund check to be mailed to them. Direct deposit means students will receive their money faster than the U.S. mail and at no cost to them. To enroll, students should complete and return to the Student Business Services office the authorization form that is available in Student Business Services or the Cashier's Office. For quarterly deadline dates students should contact Student Business Services at (909) 787-2346 or via electronic mail at sbsofc@ucrac1.ucr.edu

Checks: If students choose not to enroll in direct deposit, they must make sure that Student Business Services has their correct billing address on file so that their refund check can be mailed to that address. Note: Once the check leaves the Student Business Services office, the delivery time cannot be guaranteed through the U.S. mail. Students may either call, mail, or e-mail Student Business Services to confirm their correct billing address.

Financial Aid

All students applying for federal, state, or institutional grants, loans, and work-study must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). New Cal Grant applicants must also complete the GPA Verification Form. Financial aid applications for the 1997-98 academic year are available in the Financial Aid Office. The FAFSA must be postmarked by March 2, 1997 and required supporting documents must be submitted by May 1, 1997 for priority funding. FAFSA applications are accepted year-round; however, awards are contingent on availability of funds. Funding cannot be guaranteed to late filers.

New undergraduates apply for scholarships with the University of California Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships between November 1 and November 30, 1996. Continuing undergraduates may obtain the Continuing Undergraduate Scholarship Application from the Financial Aid Office beginning December 1, 1996 and must submit complete scholarship application packets by February 1, 1997. Late applications are not accepted.

Students who have accepted a grant, scholarship, or long-term loan through the University, should refer to the instructions contained in materials accompanying their Financial Aid Notification Letter, and to the "Fees and Charges" section in this schedule regarding payment of fees. Students must return their signed award letter, submit all required documents (i.e., signed loan promissory notes), complete any required pre-loan counseling, clear all holds, and enroll in courses before financial aid may be disbursed to pay fees and before any financial aid refund may be received.

Questions regarding financial aid should be directed to the Financial Aid Office at (909) 787-3878.

Students who are not receiving financial assistance and find it difficult to pay fees, should inquire about the Deferred Payment Plan offered by the Student Business Services Office. For more information on DPP, call (909) 787-2346.

Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid Recipients

The U.S. Department of Education requires that in order to receive student financial aid under the programs authorized by Title IV of the Higher Education Act, students must maintain satisfactory progress in the course of study they are pursuing. At the conclusion of Spring Quarter 1997, undergraduate and credential students at UCR must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.00. Graduate students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00. Undergraduate students must complete minimum units each quarter and academic year according to the schedule that appears in the "Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements for Undergraduate Financial Aid Recipients" brochure, available from the Financial Aid Office. These minimums are separate from enrollment requirements that appear under the heading "Less Than Full-Time Enrollment" in the Financial Aid Handbook. The Handbook is also available on the World Wide Web at http://www.students.ucr.edu/

The Title IV programs administered by the University of California are: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study, Federal Direct Stafford Loan, Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, and Federal Direct Plus Loan. Additionally, students receiving university and state-awarded financial aid are required to meet these same standards. Complete information about UCR requirements for satisfactory academic progress is available from the Financial Aid Office, 1156 Hinderaker Hall.
